What is WIHAN?

WIHAN is a nonprofit organization formed and directed by a coalition of people of many faiths who care about people living with HIV/AIDS in Washtenaw County and who want to bring a compassionate religious voice to this work.  Every religion calls on its members to care for those in need of help.  The global AIDS pandemic presents a crisis that is not only the perfect opportunity for people of many faiths to come together but also a way for people of many faiths to challenge themselves to live up to the ideals of their religion by helping those in their community who are HIV-positive.

"We care..."

In December 2006, Phil Volk was invited to speak at a World AIDS Day rally on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  He spoke about God's love for all people, particularly those who HIV positive as they are in need of so much love.
Afterwards, a young man came up to Phil and said, "I thought you religious types had abandoned us."
The words struck Phil like a lightening bolt.
"We haven't forgotten you; we just haven't gotten organized yet," Phil replied.
This was the Divine Calling that began WIHAN.  Today, numerous congregations of various faiths, including Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism and Druidism are involved in WIHAN's work.
